Sarasota: Sunshine & Sand
A Perfect Florida Getaway
Sarasota, Florida: A Beach Lover’s Paradise on the Gulf Coast
I was born and raised in New Jersey where going “down the shore” was practically a lifestyle. By the time I was five months old, my parents had me on the beach. Every summer weekend was spent soaking up the sun from Friday to Sunday. So, I thought I knew beaches - until I moved to Florida and stepped foot on Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota. Complete awe. The soft, white sand felt like flour between my toes, a total contrast to the rough, grainy sand of the Jersey Shore. And the water? Picture Gatorade blue waves so clear you can see little fish swimming by your feet. It's a total upgrade from the murky green waters I grew up with.
If you’re planning a trip to Sarasota, here’s what you need to know: it’s got one of the best beach destinations in Florida for a laid-back vibe. Perfect for families, couples, or solo travelers who want sunshine, soft sand, and maybe a cocktail in hand. This isn’t the place for wild nightlife or club hopping - that’s more Miami’s scene. But if you’re after peaceful mornings, stunning sunsets, and that slow Gulf Coast energy, Sarasota is your spot.
Getting to Sarasota
Surprisingly, Sarasota has its own airport — the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ). It’s small and easy to navigate, which makes for a smooth arrival and departure. Several major airlines fly into SRQ with direct routes from hubs like New Jersey, Charlotte, and Chicago. If you’re lucky enough to find a direct flight, this is by far the most convenient option.
If flights into SRQ are limited or pricey, your next best bet is to fly into Tampa International Airport (TPA), which is about a 1 to 1.5 hour drive south to Sarasota. Renting a car is your best option if you land in Tampa, especially if you plan to explore the area or hop between beaches.
✈️ Pro Tip: If you're comparing flight options, search for both "Sarasota (SRQ)" and "Tampa (TPA)" to find the best deal and travel time.
What To Do In Sarasota
Let’s start with the obvious — Sarasota is a beach lover’s paradise. But beyond the sand, there’s something for everyone, from pet-friendly parks to drag bingo nights. Here’s a roundup of top things to do in Sarasota, FL:
Siesta Key Beach - Consistently ranked the #1 beach in the U.S., Siesta Key Beach is a must-see. The sand is famously white, soft, and cool to the touch thanks to its 99% quartz composition. Parking and beach access are completely free, and there’s a convenient refreshment stand serving up alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, snacks, and casual food.
Pro tip: Bring your own reusable straw - those frozen electric lemonades hit different, and trust me, sipping with a spoon is just not the vibe.
Lido Beach - offers the best of both worlds: beautiful coastline and a nearby nature trail. It’s less crowded than Siesta, making it perfect for a peaceful beach day. Free parking, beach access, and a refreshment stand make this a super convenient option.
Bonus: it’s near upscale hotels and rental homes if you’re staying close by.
Bird Key Park (Dog-Friendly Spot!) - Traveling with your pup? Don’t skip Bird Key Park, a low-key waterfront hangout where dogs can swim, paddle board with their humans, or fetch in the shallows. Parking is limited, so get there early. It’s a local gem for pet lovers and a great way to cool off with your furry friend.
Pro Tip: Do not forget to bring fresh water for your pup! Your pup will automatically ingest a bit of saltwater as they swim and play around — saltwater in large quantities can be quite dangerous and harmful to your pup’s fluid balance. Be sure to keep your eye on them and make sure they drink some fresh water periodically.
More Than Just Beaches: Other Fun Sarasota Attractions
Farmer’s Market - If you’re into fresh produce, local treats, and a good weekend stroll, the Lakewood Ranch Farmers Market (Sundays) is the one to visit. It’s larger, easier to park at, and has a more diverse mix of vendors than the Siesta Key version. Ask me for vendor recs - I’ve got favorites!
Smugglers Cove Adventure Golf - Love mini golf and alligators? Smugglers Cove Adventure Golf is a quirky, family-friendly stop where you can play a round of putt-putt and feed baby gators afterward. It’s a hit for all ages!
Pro Tip: Sarasota heat is no joke - plan your visit in the early morning or around sunset for a cooler experience.
Drag Bingo at Bahi Hut - Looking for something offbeat and over 21? Drag Bingo at Bahi Hut is a hilarious, unforgettable night out. The bar is small but full of energy. Grab a tropical cocktail and settle in for a show - especially if Mrs. Georgia is hosting. She’s fabulous, funny, and can sing.
Siesta Key Rum - Rum fans - this is your spot. Siesta Key Rum offers fun, informative distillery tours and a lively tasting room. Try a sample (or a few), grab a souvenir bottle, and soak in the good vibes. It’s one of Sarasota’s top-rated indoor attractions and a great way to cool off after the beach.
Escape Reality - I know escape rooms have been around for a while, but it wasn’t until I read Partners in Crime by Alisha Rai that I finally felt inspired to try one for myself. And WOW I’m so glad I did!
My husband and I tackled the Clue-Dunnit room and had an absolute blast. It was intense, immersive, and honestly, such a great way to bond and have fun. We finished with just seconds to spare, which made it all the more exciting.
If you're in Sarasota area and looking for a fun, interactive experience, I highly recommend trying out an escape room - you won’t regret it.
Pro Tip: Go with people you communicate well with - every second counts!
Where to Eat & Drink
$$
Five O Donuts - I’m going to be honest - I love a donut for breakfast. Is it the healthiest choice? Nope. But is it one of the most satisfying? Absolutely. Five-O Donuts is a tiny, unassuming spot that delivers big on variety. You’ll find the classics like chocolate or strawberry glazed with sprinkles, but also wild and creative flavors like Strawberry Shortcake, Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cheesecake, and Nana Butter (think banana + peanut butter heaven). If you're a donut lover, this one’s a must.
Yoder’s Restaurant & Amish Village - Fun fact: Sarasota has a large Amish community, and Yoder’s is a local institution. It’s cozy, casual, and totally comforting. Meals start with warm toast and homemade apple butter - something I didn’t know I needed until I tried it. (Yes, I now keep a jar of apple butter in my fridge at all times.) The menu’s full of hearty favorites, but do yourself a favor and try the fried chicken. You won’t regret it.
Rendez-Vous - Bakeries are kind of a big deal in Sarasota - Publix even gets a lot of local love for their baked goods. But if you’re craving an authentic French pastry experience, head to Rendez-Vous. Their croissants are massive, perfectly flaky, and generously filled. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to visit more than once - ideal for breakfast or a mid-morning snack with coffee.
Bavaro’s Pizza Napoletana & Pastaria - Their wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas are made with high-quality ingredients and deliver that crispy-yet-chewy crust we crave.
The restaurant offers a spacious indoor and outdoor dining area, perfect for casual dinners or snapping a few Instagram-worthy shots while you wait for your pie. If you're missing that NYC-style bite while in Florida, Bavaro’s is definitely worth a visit.
Must Try: Classic Margherita or their Penne vodka.
Wicked Cantina - Looking for the best Tex-Mex food in Sarasota? Wicked Cantina is one of my go-to spots. The food is bold, flavorful, and consistently well-cooked - everything from tacos to enchiladas is packed with fresh ingredients and vibrant flavor.
As with many great Mexican restaurants, you'll be greeted with complimentary chips and salsa the moment you sit down (always a win). The staff here is top-notch fun, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The upbeat music and colorful décor create a lively, inviting atmosphere that makes your meal feel like a mini celebration.
Tamiami Tap - is a laid-back, welcoming spot in Sarasota with a great indoor and outdoor dining space, ideal for everything from happy hour to casual dinners. The staff is super friendly, though service can be a bit slow at times just something to keep in mind if you're in a rush.
The food is flavorful and satisfying, with a menu that covers everything from classic pub bites to heartier entrées. One of the best times to visit? During the holidays, when the space transforms into a cozy winter wonderland, complete with festive decorations and seasonal charm.
Holiday Pro Tip: Come during December to enjoy the decked-out décor and festive atmosphere - perfect for photos and good cheer.
If you're looking for a relaxed bar and grill with personality in Sarasota, Tamiami Tap is a solid choice.
Brick’s Smoked Meats - The service was friendly, though a bit on the slower side—not a dealbreaker, just something to note. There’s a spacious indoor seating area, and if you’re visiting over the weekend, you might catch some live music in the evenings, which really adds to the atmosphere.
The outdoor patio is pet-friendly, so if you’re traveling with your dog, definitely bring them along!
And don’t skip the bacon burnt ends - they’re a must-try and absolutely packed with flavor.
Pro Tip: Parking is limited on the street, but there's a convenient and affordable parking garage just steps away, which makes visiting a lot easier!
Sarasota adjacent picks worth the drive
First Watch - Yes, it’s a chain - but hear me out. First Watch is hands down my favorite breakfast spot, and it never disappoints. You’ll find multiple locations around town, but the vibe is always welcoming and fresh. We always start with the cinnamon sugar donut holes (just trust me), then move on to something savory like the Farmhouse Skillet my personal go-to. It's balanced, hearty, and just the right amount of indulgent.
The Original Rainbow Cone - If you're in the mood for something sweet and cold (because, let’s be real Florida heat), head to The Original Rainbow Cone. They offer a large variety of classic and creative ice cream flavors served in cones, cups, or sundaes. But what really makes this place stand out? They sell ice cream cake by the slice - yes, slice! It's the perfect treat if you want something a little more indulgent without committing to a whole cake or stressing about it melting in the car.
It’s a small spot with limited indoor and outdoor seating, so plan to grab your treat and maybe stroll around if it’s busy.
My pick? The Salted Caramel Mackinac Fudge. I’m obsessed. Rich, sweet, salty - basically everything I love in a dessert.
Tandoor Indian Restaurant -I literally cannot say enough good things about Tandoor Indian Restaurant. From the incredible service to the stress-free parking and of course, the delicious, flavor-packed food this spot checks every single box.
Whether you’re dining indoors or outdoors, the ambiance is relaxed and the staff is consistently warm, attentive, and welcoming. You never feel rushed, and the experience feels elevated without being overly formal.
The menu features a wide range of authentic Indian dishes - everything from buttery naan and rich curries to sizzling tandoori platters. Every bite is full of flavor and clearly made with care.
Good Liquid Brewing - If you’re heading to Good Liquid Brewing in Lakewood Ranch, here’s your heads-up: try to make a reservation if you want to sit indoors - it gets busy! That said, I almost always choose to sit outside, and for good reason: the views of the water are unbeatable.
We’ve spotted turtles swimming nearby and even caught glimpses of large fish gliding by. It’s peaceful, scenic, and perfect for enjoying a drink or two (or three 😅).
The drink menu is stacked - so many delicious craft beer options, it’s hard not to want to try them all (and yes, we pretty much have). Whether you're into IPAs, sours, lagers, or something seasonal, there's something for every taste.
And let’s not skip the food - their menu is full of tasty surprises and pairs perfectly with whatever you're sipping.
Pro Tip: Get a flight to sample more brews and soak in the views.
Food + Beer - is a Florida-based franchise, and if you're looking for a spot to grab drinks, watch the game, and indulge in seriously satisfying comfort food, this place hits all the marks.
The Sarasota location has a super chill, welcoming vibe, making it ideal for casual hangouts with friends. Whether you're in the mood for fried appetizers, a hearty burger, or a cold beer, you'll find plenty to love here.
My Go-To: The burgers are always cooked to perfection big, juicy, and absolutely delicious. I leave so full every time.
The service is consistently great, with friendly and attentive waitstaff who are more than happy to offer recommendations if you're stuck choosing. Plus, parking is plentiful, which is always a win in busy areas.
Perfect for game days, casual nights out, or weekend bites with friends.
The Breakfast Company - There’s so much to love about The Breakfast Company - it’s quickly become one of my absolute favorite breakfast spots. I’ve come here with my husband, brought my mom, and raved about it to anyone who’ll listen.
Let’s start with the star of the show: the Cinnamon Toast French Toast. Calling it “obsession-worthy” might actually be an understatement. And don’t even get me started on the Pineapple Upside Down Mimosas - they’re that good. I even tried to recreate them at home (and yes, you can too—recipe linked here!).
The vibe is upbeat, modern, and the dessert counter you pass while waiting for your table? Pure temptation. I’m always mentally adding something new to my “take home treat” list.
Pro Tip: Parking is easy, but this place gets busy - especially on weekends. Arrive early to beat the rush and avoid a long wait.
$$$
B &B Chophouse and Market - Okay, you got me - technically this isn’t in Sarasota, but it’s just a short drive away in a neighboring town and 100% worth it, especially if you’re craving a top-tier steak dinner. B & B Chophouse and Market delivers every time.
My go-to order? The top sirloin paired with rich, creamy au gratin potatoes - total comfort food perfection. My husband swears by the flat iron steak with a side of crispy truffle fries. It’s one of those meals that’s so consistently good, it’s become a tradition for us.
Whether you’re celebrating something special or just want a break from seafood and beach fare, this cozy, upscale spot is a solid pick.
Pro Tip: Make a reservation if you're going on a weekend—it fills up fast, especially during peak season!
Post Kitchen and Bar - If you're looking for a Sarasota restaurant that delivers great service, consistently tasty food, and generous portions, look no further than Post Kitchen & Bar. Whether you're stopping in for lunch, dinner, or weekend brunch, the experience is always satisfying.
The staff is friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between relaxed and stylish. It’s one of those spots where you always leave full and happy - every single time.
Pro Tip: Come hungry portions are big, and everything’s made with fresh, bold flavors.
$
Origin Craft Beer and Pizza Cafe -This may be a tiny pizza café, but don’t let the size fool you—Origin Craft Beer and Pizza Café serves up some of the best Northeast-style pizza I’ve found in Sarasota.
Fellow NJ/NY folks, you know the struggle pizza and bagels in Florida just don’t hit the same. But Origin comes pretty close. Their pizza is crisp, flavorful, and always hits the spot.
And their wings? Absolutely next-level. My husband and I literally count each other’s wing bones to make sure no one’s sneaking an extra. They’re that good. Whether you go classic buffalo or something spicy and bold, the wings are juicy, saucy, and addicting.
If you’re in the mood for craft beer, quality pizza, and wings worth fighting over, Origin should be on your Sarasota food list.
C’est La Vie - C’est La Vie is one of my favorite spots in Sarasota for a cozy, French-inspired lunch and sweet treats. The staff is incredibly kind and enthusiastic, which adds to the café’s welcoming, relaxed vibe.
My husband and I love stopping by for a light lunch and grabbing a few pastries to take home. The baguettes have that perfect crunch on the outside with a soft, airy inside exactly how they should be. The croissants are buttery, flakey perfection, and don’t even get me started on the desserts.
The éclairs and lemon meringue tarts are exceptionally delicious honestly worth the trip all on their own!
If you’re looking for an authentic French bakery in Sarasota or simply craving a croissant and café au lait, C’est La Vie is a must-visit.
Via La Casa - is one of those hidden gems you’ll want to revisit again and again. This two-in-one concept blends a charming coffee shop with a beautifully curated home decor boutique, making it the perfect spot for a relaxed afternoon.
Located right in Lakewood Ranch, the café is tucked inside the shop, offering plenty of comfy seating that invites you to settle in, sip a latte, and chat with friends like no one’s listening.
While you wait for your drink (or after you’ve finished it), take a stroll through the store - there’s a gorgeous variety of candles, spices, kitchen goods, and more that make for great souvenirs or gifts.
The space is aesthetic and cozy - perfect for catching up, journaling, or grabbing a low-key coffee away from the buzz.
Sarasota Travel Tips
1. Getting Around
While Sarasota is a relatively small city, you'll still want to rent a car or have a ride share app ready. Some areas (especially Siesta Key) are more walkable, but many top spots are spread out.
2. Pack Smart
Florida weather can be unpredictable hot and humid with quick rain showers, especially in the summer. Pack lightweight clothes, lots of sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and maybe even a mini fan. If you're headed to the beach, don’t forget a reusable straw and beach shoes (depending on which beach you go to the sand may be more “rocky”).
3. Pet Parents, Take Note
Sarasota is super pet-friendly! You’ll find outdoor dining patios that welcome pups, parks like Bird Key where your dog can swim, and even restaurants with dog bowls and pup cups. Always check ahead, but you’ll find lots of love for four-legged travelers.
4. Parking Can Be Tricky
Some of the best restaurants and attractions have limited street parking, but many offer affordable or free garage options nearby. Plan ahead if you're visiting during busy times or weekend evenings.
5. Visit in Shoulder Season
For fewer crowds and better hotel rates, consider visiting during late spring or early fall. You'll still get that gorgeous Gulf weather, but with shorter waits and more availability across the board.
Why Sarasota Should Be on Your Travel List
Whether you're chasing the #1 beach in the U.S., looking for the perfect brunch mimosa, or just want to hang out in a laid-back, pet-friendly city with tons of good food - Sarasota delivers.
It has a unique mix of charm, flavor, and fun that feels like a hidden gem, especially compared to Florida’s bigger name beach towns. With free beach access, local gems like Siesta Key Rum and Yoder’s Restaurant, and vibrant weekend energy, it’s a destination worth exploring again and again.
So pack your sunscreen, grab your pup, and get ready for a little sunshine, a lot of good food, and some unforgettable Gulf Coast vibes.
