Homemade Dog Food with Ground Turkey:
Easy & Nutritious Recipe for Your Fur baby
One thing I’ve always done with Scarlett is switch up the flavors in her meals (even when she was eating kibble). She’s a little foodie just like me and honestly, I couldn’t imagine eating the same thing every day, so why should she? On our homemade dog food journey, we’ve tested recipes with ground beef, ground turkey, and ground chicken (all coming to the blog soon!). Each one brings something different to the bowl, and Scarlett has loved them all.
Pro tip: If you’re making the switch to homemade dog food, don’t forget to brush your pup’s teeth daily! Our vet reminded us that while kibble can help reduce plaque by scraping the teeth, homemade meals don’t offer the same benefit, so daily brushing becomes even more important.
Instructions
Wash and finely chop the sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli (including stems), snack peppers, and red cabbage. Set aside in separate bowls.
Break out the slow cooker.
Add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil to the bottom of the slow cooker. This prevents sticking and adds a healthy source of fat.
Add the ground turkey, sweet potatoes, carrots, rinsed green lentils, and bone broth to the slow cooker. Stir everything together to combine.
Set the slow cooker to low for 6 hours. Let it simmer and fill your kitchen with dog-approved smells!
After 6 hours, stir in the green peas, broccoli, snack peppers, and red cabbage. Cook for an additional 30 minutes to soften and preserve nutrients.
Let the food cool slightly, then portion into airtight containers.
